Nargis cyclone email from inside Burma

For your information, this is the update from Yangon.

Objet : Information from Yangon

E-mail from Burma

 Dear All,

Everyone would be interested to know updates in Yangon

Gasoline : official rate is 2,500 kyats

previous collect rate : 5,200 kyats

present collect rate : 7,000 kyats minimum

             selling rate : 10,000 ~ 12,000

(quota changes daily upon situation, 2 gals or 4 gals or 6 gals

depending upon supply at station, no. of queue cars, time of the day)

most of the streets are blocked by the queue

yesterday, it took me 7hrs to get 4 gals for 2 days quota, will

have to go back tomorrow and maybe will have to take leave again

  Eggs        : previous price : ~80 kyats

            today's selling price : ~200 kyats

Water        : previous price for 20litre is 300 kyats

            today's price : 500 ~ 700

But we can see various kinds of shrimps or lobsters at markets due to

lack of cold storage and prices are reasonable.  Food is not scarce in

Myanmar (presently).  Power supply is given back to certain areas

according to condition of power lines, cables, damaged wrecks within

area.  Our house got back power at 3:30pm yesterday 6th May.  As we have

tube, no need to worry about water.

Up to now, no outbreak of crimes nor bulgary seen nor heard.  Lots and

lots of piles of branches and fallen trees seen along almost every

roadsides and smell of green leaves.  No rain yet but not so hot like

previous month.  Lucky that since no rain, no blockage of drains yet.

Yangon seems like a ruined city now.

Everyone within our community is in good health.  Not yet needed to

evacuate the country.  All of us here are still surviving.

Only worst places are along the delta which villages were washed away by

the tides with no places to run for.

We'll keep you all posted of updated events.

  Best regards,

Nargis cyclone‏ email from inside Burma

Hi everyone. This is just a quick email to let you know I am fine, survived the cyclone. The situation is devastating, and numbers of lives lost increasing as we learn more of the impact. The cyclone was category 3 (there are only 5 categories, and Katrina was cat. 4). All phone lines and electricity are down.. Water is already scarce and food and fuel prices inflated across the city. No one expected this! I am not one who easily scares, but I have to say it was pretty frightening having my windows explode and water seeping in through the ceiling etc. whilst watching pieces of buildings flying in the wind!

We have teams going into the field to assess the situation there, and what we have heard so far is tragic – hundreds of deaths, community infrastructure flattened and so many needs. In Rangoon, there are trees all over the streets, ripped out from the roots; billboards destroyed, smashed glass and cars, telegraph poles and wires all over the road, pieces of roofs and debris lining the streets and

***

We made it to the Dr last night and the hospital (one that still has it’s roof!) and got some stronger pain killers and a cast *** three fractures, no wonder it hurt...!

Must get back to it, but just wanted to provide an update. Some quick pics attached.

For those who pray, I will send you some more specific prayer points soon!
